I have known Bruce Buchanan, since he arrived at Stanford University
in the late 1960s as a research associate and where he is now
Professor (Research).

The primary bases for my support of his nomination to membership in
NAE is his pioneering work on the development of expert system
technology.  I have been surprised by the success and acceptance
of this technology.  I would not have thought that a useful technology
could have been based on the limited scientific results of artificial
intelligence research.  But it has.

Buchanan's pioneering work on MYCIN (with Ted Shortliffe, MD) laid
the basis of this technology.  His subsequent work on developing
Expert System Shells is a worthy continuation.
